Relics in the Waste
Relics are artifacts left over from the society of the Old Days, found throughout Keszyd. Though no written history survives of the civilization from the First Age, numerous relics can still be found throughout the world. Mostly isolated, independent pieces of technology, relics serve a variety of purposes, though many have been worn down by the passage of time to the point of being unusable. Most that still work serve fairly mundane purposes – such as providing light or playing music – or seem to be purely decorative. Others, although they seem to work, serve no obvious discernible purpose.
A thriving trade has developed around the sale of relics, with artifact dealers present in every major city. Most buyers purchase relics for home decoration or for prestige. Because of their scarcity, relics tend to command very high prices on the market, and owning one is considered a sign of wealth. Some collectors and scholars attempt to discover the uses of various relics either out of personal interest, or a more general desire to understand how the civilization of the Old Days functioned. Relics have thus far yielded very little information about those that used them, however.
The ways in which relics function is also a source of mystery to scholars and traders alike. While many of their mechanisms seem purely mechanical, there also appears to be some magical component involved, though no specific spells can be seen at work.
